Joella is currently a PhD student in cultural anthropology at Duke University, with research interests in aurality, soundscapes, and built environments. Her doctoral research explores the role of noise regulations in the making of urban spaces and infrastructure planning efforts in northern Uganda. In addition to her zeal for sound-based projects, Joella enjoys tinkering with visual creative mediums, including photography and painting.
With support from the Audiovisualities Lab, Joella has co-organized the Sonic Perspectives workshop series (2014-2015), which seeks to facilitate dialogue and collaboration surrounding sound studies theory and practice. The series of five workshops integrate diverse and interdisciplinary approaches to engaging with/in sound in an effort to explore potential implications and opportunities for sound studies. More about the workshops can be found here.
Joella holds an MA in anthropology from the New School for Social Research, and a BA in anthropology and economics from the University of Notre Dame.
