April 16, 9:00-5:00, UNC IAH (Hyde Hall)

Augmented reality, or the augmentation of our physical environment with additional sensory input, hasbeen part of our lives for a long time. However, with the recent introduction of mobile devices such as the iPhone or Android-based smartphones and software products such as the Layar Reality Browser, augmented reality has created exciting new possibilities not just for marketing purposes, but also for teaching and research.

This workshop will provide an introduction to the concept of augmented reality and then help familiarize participants with the Layar Reality Browser. Participants will create a small project in Layar and discuss the applicability of augmented reality to their own work.

When you register, please indicatewhether you have a device capable of running the Layar Reality Browser and if you can bring the device to the workshop. This currently includes the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, smartphones running the Android operating system and selected Nokia phones. Please install the Layar Reality Browser before the workshop. You can download it from the iPhone App Store, the Android Market or Nokia’s Ovi Store. The workshop is taught by Markus Wust form North Carolina State Libraries. This is a free workshop.
