Edouard Duval-Carrié, Deborah Jenson, and students in their co-taught “Colonial and Decolonial Aesthetics” created a “pre-libretto” art project that both translates and illustrates the 18th century Creole opera, Jeannot et Thérèse (Johnny and Theresa [1758]), which was based on Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s opera Le Devin du Village (1752). They represent the “libertine” sexual politics and the fashions and other aesthetic visual motifs of colonial life in Saint-Domingue through the English text and illustrations, page borders, and cover art for libretto. The “pre-libretto” will be ready for adaptation to an eventual actual performance of the opera in the US. This project is linked to the scholarly edition of the opera that Dubois, Jenson, Guadeloupean musicologist Bernard Camier, and Duval-Carrié are preparing.
