Widely known for its endangered rainforest and biota, the Amazon is also the home for a vast diversity of human cultures, languages, and forms of knowledge. More than three-hundred indigenous languages are spoken in the region despite centuries of colonial violence and ongoing pressures imposed by nation states, agrobusiness, and the interests of extractivism. In addition to indigenous communities, the Amazon also harbors a wide array of other social and ethnic groups, including Afro-descendent communities that are often ignored in depictions of the region. 

With attention to this human diversity and to the many existential threats to their survival and autonomy, the Amazon Lab’s “Image, Memory, and Museum” symposium asks:

• What is the role of mnemonic technologies and of institutions charged with preserving Amazonian cultures?
• What are the best practices for photographers, filmmakers, and artists who hope to avoid colonial patterns of cross-cultural interaction?
• How should traditional forms of knowledge and cultural practices inform projects that intend to safeguard local knowledge?
• What should be the role of museums, given these institutions’ checkered history of association with colonial powers and nation states?

In response to these and other questions, the symposium will promote a series of dialogues with scholars, artists, activists, documentarians, indigenous cultural producers, and museum professionals so as to reflect on the past, present and future of the cultures of the Amazon.

Conhecida pela sua ameaçada biodiversidade, a Amazônia também abriga uma imensa multiplicidade de culturas, idiomas e formas de saber. Mais de trezentas línguas indígenas são faladas na região, apesar de séculos de violência colonial e das pressões contínuas exercidas por estados, pelo agronegócio e pelos interesses do extrativismo predatório. Além de comunidades indígenas, a Amazônia também é habitada por uma variedade de outros grupos, incluindo comunidades afrodescendentes quase sempre ignoradas em descrições da região. 

Com atenção à diversidade humana e às ameaças à sua sobrevivência e autonomia, o Amazon Lab (sediado na Duke University, EUA), através do simpósio “Imagem, Memória, e Museu na Amazônia”, formula as seguintes perguntas:

• Qual é o papel de tecnologias mnemônicas e instituições encarregadas com a preservação das culturas da Amazônia?
• Quais são as melhores práticas para fotógrafos, cineastas, e artistas que almejam evitar os padrões coloniais de interação entre culturas?
• De que maneiras as formas de conhecimento e práticas culturais tradicionais devem informar projetos que pretendem salvaguardar saberes locais?
• Qual deve ser o papel do museu hoje, dado o seu passado marcado pela associação com poderes coloniais e com o estado-nação?

Para responder a essas e a outras perguntas, o simpósio promoverá uma série de diálogos entre pesquisadores, artistas, ativistas, documentaristas, e profissionais de museus para refletir sobre o passado, o presente e o futuro das culturas da Amazônia.
