This project website is created by Stefani Jones, Kendra Kirsonis, Saira Butt, and Danielle Mayall, as part of the Spring 2012 South Sudan in Motion independent study with Lab Co-director Erika Weinthal and TA McKenzie Johnson. SSiM sought to identify reasons for and characteristics of movement and migration in South Sudan. As the world’s newest country, South Sudan faces major humanitarian and governance challenges. One of these challenges is reconciling the differences between the numerous tribal and ethnic groups that make up its population. Over the years, the boundaries and regions that tribes have inhabited have become more fluid, and movement in South Sudan has become more difficult to track. Through a historical analysis, collection of relevant data on movement, and creation of maps and diagrams, we sought to paint a picture of the complicated situation in South Sudan.
