The Story+ 2019 team “Photographic Life of Harriet: Tubman’s Life in Pictures” explored the visual life of Harriet Tubman in diverse illustrations of the abolitionist.
Led by faculty advisor Dr. Jasmine Nichole Cobb and graduate mentor Amanda Bennett (PhD Candidate), undergraduates Veronica Niamba (T’21), Annie Han (T’22), Daniella Welton (T’22) produced a website and zine on the visual representations of Harriet Tubman, organizing the archive of Tubman’s representation from photographs she took during her lifetime, to her image in public memory, including statues, memorials, museums, murals and fine art by canonic artists including Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Alison Saar, and Glen Ligon.
Story+ is a 6-week paid summer research experience for Duke students—undergraduates and graduates—interested in exploring humanities research approaches including archival research, oral histories, narrative analysis, visual analysis, and more, with an emphasis on storytelling for different public audiences.
