Complex Trauma in Haiti

  • Course Type:  Independent Study
  • Instructor(s):  Deborah Jenson; Mary Caton Lingold (TA)
  • Class Time:  Every Other Tuesday 4:30-6:30 PM

“Complex Trauma, Complex Problem in Haiti” is the 5th semester of group independent studies based on the Haiti Lab-initiated model of mentoring independent student work to advance faculty-driven research projects pertaining to current global challenges. The tutorial supports independent study students through one-on-one research coaching, by creating a community of co-learners, and by offering in-class presentations by experts in fields related to student projects. Bi-weekly meetings create opportunities for engaging seminar-style discussions. The course is also designed to integrate undergraduate research into larger ongoing projects conducted in the Haiti Lab. This semester, students are contributing to the development of a Standard of Care initiative, a study of PTSD and Complex Trauma in post-earthquake Haiti, as well as historical work on Caribbean cholera outbreaks, and a student-initiated sanitation project in rural Haiti.
