In this group independent study, students choose a topic related to global health research and clinical practice in Haiti, often with a connection to core affiliated faculty member Kathy Walmer and Family Health Ministries programs in Haiti. Topics include working with the cervical cancer prevention program and HPV research, the safe motherhood program and maternal mortality project, the new Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) incidence and cultural presentation study, and GPS mapping of post-earthquake healthcare facilities in Leogane, Haiti. Student projects should target a highly focused area of research study with approval of Prof. Walmer and Haiti Lab co-directors. Students should also consider exploring technology-related global health projects under the rubric of the Representation and Technology in Haiti group independent study. Successful work in this independent study will be considered in applications for DukeEngage Haiti. Students may also apply to be research assistants for the PTSD project and participate in interviews during a fall break trip to the FHM facilities in Leogane, Haiti.
