Ju Yon Kang’s honors thesis for International Comparative Studies is based on her work in the Spring 2011 Rebuilding Women’s Rights independent study (see blog here). “The Hidden Epidemic” connects violence against women in Haiti to patterns of economic, political, social insecurity that predated the 2010 earthquake. Kang argues that “The climate of insecurity produces two social mechanisms—the crisis of masculinity and the feminization of insecurity—that make women vulnerable to violence, especially sexual assault.” Follow link below to Duke’s Electronic Theses repository to view the full study.
