People in the Lab

Kathy Walmer

Kathy Walmer is the Executive Director of Family Health Ministries, whose mission is to support Haitian communities and their efforts to build and sustain healthy families. She also  teaches at the Duke Global Health Institute and is the program leader of DukeEngage in Haiti. She has collaborated on many Haiti Lab projects, including the Standard of Care project, which she co-leads with Deborah Jenson with Dr. Karen O’Donnell. In this project, Duke faculty and students interviewed community members and healthcare stakeholders in Haiti to understand local conceptions of health care resources, and to strategize on realistic referral processes in the context of health research. This project addresses the ethical issues of gathering sensitive data, such as data on post-traumatic stress, in vulnerable populations. Walmer is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and she holds a Masters degree in Nursing and is a certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
