Jules Odendahl-James

Jules Odendahl-James is professional director and dramaturg specializing in art+science collaborations, documentary performance and works by women playwrights. At Duke University, she is a lecturer in Theater Studies, the Program Director of Arts and Humanities Advising, a member of the Disability Access Initiative and a 2017-18 Teaching for Equity Fellow. She was a Kienle Scholar of Medical Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine (2016-18) where she had the great fortune to meet and begin collaborations with Marina Tsaplina. In the summer of 2018, she and Marina and Chair of Theater Studies at Duke, Torry Bend, constructed and taught the Puppetry and Embodied Imagination module of the Reimagining Medicine pilot program. She has taught courses in medical humanities at Duke such as Playing Doctor, Medical Stories on Stage, Performing Science, and Visual Cultures of Medicine. Her work has appeared in the journals Theater Topics, Theater Survey, and Crime Media Culture, as well as the collections Violence in American Culture, The Routledge Companion to Dramaturgy and Physical Dramaturgy.
