Makerere University in Kampala Uganda, ranked 4th in Africa (excluding South Africa), has the only degree-granting undergraduate BME major in Sub-Saharan Africa. Like Duke, Makerere also has a school of engineering (College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology) that is adjacent to a large teaching Hospital (Mulago National Referral Hospital). A critical element in realizing Africa’s entrepreneurial potential in health care is to provide opportunities for Africans to participate meaningfully in the engineering design process, and to do so in collaboration with colleagues from developed counties. The goal of this class is, with oversight, to develop working design teams comprised of Duke and Makerere BME students to design solutions to a particular healthcare needs in Uganda, such as affordable and effective medical instrumentation, hospital equipment, diagnostics, treatment, drug storage, patient management, medical waste disposal etc. Students receive supplemental training in qualitative research methods and cultural competence.
