“Singing the Same Song”: A global perspective on patient-provider communication and the patient experience

Course offered in Fall 2018: open only to students enrolled in Freshman Focus Program

In this seminar, we will explore different aspects of the provider patient conversation and the patient experience, as it occurs around the world. We specifically consider the theoretical basis of empathic health communication, and then consider the obstacles to communication that occur for marginalized groups in US society, and in low and middle income countries. Experiential learning opportunities include a requirement to shadow a hospital interpreter and reflect on the immigrant experience in our health system.
