{"id":655,"date":"2021-02-25T01:44:45","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T01:44:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.fhi.duke.edu\/manuscriptmigration\/?p=655"},"modified":"2021-04-18T14:48:24","modified_gmt":"2021-04-18T14:48:24","slug":"manuscript-markets-workshop-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.fhi.duke.edu\/manuscriptmigration\/2021\/02\/25\/manuscript-markets-workshop-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Manuscript &amp; Markets Workshop Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Introduction<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On February 24th, 2021 the Manuscript Migration Lab hosted a conversation with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Eugenio Donadoni (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/departments\/Books-and-Manuscripts-10-1.aspx?pagesection=contacts#contacts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CHRISTIE\u2019S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Director, Senior Specialist, Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts) and Dr. Sandra Hindman (Owner of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesenluminures.com\/gallery\/contact-list\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Les Enluminures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This online workshop discussed how auction houses and bookselling works, how provenance research is conducted, and how the market for rare books and manuscripts has evolved over the last few decades with the advent of technology. We have created this preliminary report summarizing the conversations and conclusions from the event for those who could not make it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Preliminary Questions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In preparation for this event, we developed several preliminary questions we hoped our speakers could shed light on:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can you tell us about how you got into this work?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can you tell us about the range of items that you work with and perhaps some areas where you choose not to be active?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where do materials come from (especially manuscripts) and who are the major purchasers?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can you tell us about private ownership?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who are the buyers?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How have you seen the practice of selling and the field evolve? What trends for the future might you imagine?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How do you think the market is evolving in relation to the recognition and management of Heritage, what impact do you see in your work?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Dr. Eugenio Donadoni<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can you tell us about the range of items that you work with and perhaps some areas where you choose not to be active?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Donadoni\u2019s job as the senior specialist of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts for Christie\u2019s involves dating, cataloging, researching (particularly provenance), describing, and evaluating objects that are primarily from the 12th-16th centuries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His department in particular works with the following items:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Medieval manuscripts<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He in particular works with 12th-16th items but has also dealt with the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">oldest known manuscript of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/en\/lot\/lot-6217457\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ezekiel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Latin&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">18th century illuminated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlineonly.christies.com\/s\/valuable-books-manuscripts\/spanish-forger-fl-paris-end-19th-beginning-20th-c-9\/93363\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">manuscript<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Forger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spanish forger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Early printed books<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cartography (maps, atlases)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Botanical books<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Autograph specialty objects<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This does not just include books but also objects connected to an author (i.e. Charles Dickens\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlineonly.christies.com\/s\/open-book-fine-travel-americana-literature-history-print-manuscript\/charles-dickenss-writing-desk-71\/86918\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">writing desk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Modern 1st edition of books&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Greek Manuscripts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ethiopic Manuscripts<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Very rare and usually from the 19th-20th centuries<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other objects not evaluated by this department<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Islamic art including illuminated Qurans are in a separate department&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hebrew manuscripts have an external consultant<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Papyri are handled by the antiquities department&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where do materials come from (especially manuscripts) and who are the major purchasers?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are two primary sources of these objects:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Institutions: Metropolitan Museum of Art, universities, J. Paul Getty Museum&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Museums that typically provide objects are located in the U.S. and are trying to raise money&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Private consignors: collectors (aristocrats, children of collectors)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who are the buyers?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are typically two types of buyers:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Institutions: Museums typically<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beinecke: usually objects with research potential&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Getty: more beautiful and \u201cmuseum-worthy\u201d objects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trade: individuals either buying objects on commission or ascertaining items for private collectors&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How have you seen the practice of selling and the field evolve? What trends for the future might you imagine?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The peak for Medieval manuscripts was in the 1980s-90s<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ex: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Gospels of Henry the Lion <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sold in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1983\/12\/07\/arts\/germans-buy-rare-medieval-book.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1983<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for $11.7 million<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The market has picked up in the last five years but the interests have changed<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People are interested in works either in French or Middle English literature<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Buyers have changed: some buying just for art (illuminations &#8211; making quality\/condition very important) and research&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How do you think the market is evolving in relation to the recognition and management of Heritage, what impact do you see in your work?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Problem: impossible to define cultural property<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Approach: adhere to the strictest regime, which happens to be the U.S., when works are imported from certain countries&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An export license is required&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Objects from certain areas (Middle East, Turkey, Greece, Syria, and Egypt) require more documentation than this, especially if these items are of cultural importance (i.e. extensive provenance documentation)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brexit: may have implications for trade relations (i.e. import\/export taxes) but for now the checks on these items haven\u2019t changed<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, manuscripts that have resided in the UK for 50 years or more has to be submitted to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artscouncil.org.uk\/supporting-collections-and-cultural-property\/reviewing-committee#section-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Arts Council Committee <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to determine whether an object can leave the country or not&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This process can take weeks or months&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This council can block export licenses. When this happens, the country that the object was going to must raise money for the purchase (these entities usually have a certain amount of time to do this such as 30 months)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Questions for Dr. Donadoni:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What level of documentation of provenance do sellers provide? Is there a basic requirement?&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Required: proof that importation was done correctly (i.e export license from origin country)&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Items of cultural importance undergo a more complex process<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Christie\u2019s does provenance research after acquisition that the seller did not provide&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Research is carried out until the cataloging deadline<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Auction houses are sometimes the last glimpse we have of an object before it goes from one private collection to another. What is the role of auction houses in allowing scholars to do research?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His department is comprised of more academics than booksellers so they try to place the importance on access rather than ownership&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are unable to give out the information of owners without their permission so, Dr. Donadoni will contact the owner as a mediator&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When doing provenance research for objects whose history is not complete, what do you do?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Run search in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdbm.library.upenn.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Schoenberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> database or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rarebookhub.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rare Book Hub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can search items based on number of leaves, miniatures, and lines or even provenance&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look at relevant catalogs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How does the auction house handle gaps in provenance that are likely \u201cnot nice\u201d actions but that cannot be proven?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These items are typically referred to the restitution team or names are checked in the \u201csensitive names database\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If an item has a vague, possibly sensitive history, then they don\u2019t sell it at auction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Dr. Sandra Hindman&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can you tell us about the range of items that you work with and perhaps some areas where you choose not to be active?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are four categories of items:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Text Manuscripts&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The online catalog can be found here:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesenluminures.com\/artworks\/categories\/11\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.lesenluminures.com\/artworks\/categories\/11\/<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.textmanuscripts.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.textmanuscripts.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Illuminated Manuscripts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Miniatures&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Single leaves but no fragments<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only high quality with good provenance (sister leaves can be found in museums)&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Medieval and Renaissance jewelry (especially rings)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Language areas:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Latin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dutch&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">English<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">French<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">German&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Italian&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Les Enluminures takes a pedagogical approach (meaning Dr. Hindman works with individuals who have PhDs and they typically don\u2019t outsource. However, for Greek and Hebrew manuscripts they do outsource<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does not work with Turkish, Arabic, or Indian items&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does not work with ancient papyri because it has a lot of provenance issues<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where do materials come from (especially manuscripts) and who are the major purchasers?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a wide variety including book dealers, auction houses, private collectors, institutional deaccession<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who are the buyers?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Illuminated manuscripts:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mostly museums purchase these (Getty, Louvre, British Library, Museum of Modern Art)&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Text manuscripts:&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">90% of buyers are institutions (the majority of these are in America)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yale and SMU are some of the biggest buyers&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If there is a manuscript that has a sister manuscript, that owner gets the right of first refusal&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What can you tell us about private sellers?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They buy and sell about 60-100 manuscripts a year from and to private collections<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How have you seen the practice of selling and the field evolve?
