Zoom KABOOM Series Launch: Overview of Possible Worlds

October 12, 2020 @ 5:00 am - 6:00 pm UTC-5

Zoom KABOOM presents:
‘An Overview of Possible Worlds’ with Mingyong Cheng and Rebecca Uliasz
Mon Oct 12, 5-6:15pm
Please join Social Practice Lab Zoom Kaboom graduate fellows, Mingyong Cheng (MFA EDA candidate) and Rebecca Uliasz (CMAC PhD candidate) as we kick off this new series (details and meeting link are below). Mingyong will provide a quick overview of preliminary research our group has done on realms and platforms we may explore as public alternatives to zoom in the next few weeks and months. Becca will follow with comments, as well as notes on related experiences and dissertation work.
We will only use zoom this time, so no need to prepare or download anything else before. Just register at the link and join. The series is designed for anyone to join for just one session, or as many as they want. Our research group will also remain open to new participants throughout the process, so come check it out and you only need to register once. Today’s session will be good to join if you want to get a general sense of what we may be doing and/or if you want to be involved in any of its future sessions.
Required preparation, apps, or installations: Only zoom
Required equipment: Any device that supports zoom
Coming next week:
Mon Oct 19, 5—6:15pm Remote Pushcart and MFAEDA Thesis with Zaire McPhearson and Caitlin Kelly

This new SPL series is based on the sharing and production of online experiences and meeting places. How can we safely fight against the alienation of this pandemic, as well as other past and future obstacles to social life, be it the distances between us, our implicit hierarchies, or even specific features of our bodies? What can more immersive modes of remote shared experience bring to our life, dialogues, interactions, politics, artworks and performances? How can we leave Zoom behind us and forge a journey into alternate domains?
Accompanied with simple instructions on how to join, every Zoom KABOOM session includes at least one guide who is familiar with that week’s alternative platform. What we do or discuss as we experiment with alternative platforms will be different each time and it may or may not be directly related to a given platform.
Each session has three parts, starting with us gathering at our regular Zoom (Kaboom) link for 15min, then exploring the alternative platform for 30min, and ending with 15min group commentary, reflection or analysis at the regular zoom link. If a platform is conducive to conversation, we may stay there for the final part.
