In Fall 2015, Pedro Lasch and Creative Time partnered with Duke University and Coursera to produce the first massive online course to ever use a MOOC platform itself as an artistic medium. Launched with its inaugural segments on ‘Public Art & Pedagogy’ and ‘Activism & Social Movements’ the ART of the MOOC is both a series of courses on these topics, as well as a global public art work where participants create their own projects and social interventions. Co-taught with Creative Time’s artistic director Nato Thompson, and including guest presentations from twenty-nine artists, activists, and scholars from around the world, ART of the MOOC is offered in both English and Spanish and now has over 17,000 enrolled participants in 134 countries. It is also one of the signature projects of the FHI Social Practice Lab at Duke University.

During his talk, Lasch will focus on the evolution of this work, its learner and global community projects, as well as significant precedents that frame it. At the end of the presentation, he will also be joined by UdK professor Mathias Hinke to announce our new segment in the ART of MOOC series to be launched in January 2018 on Coursera, a course entitled ‘Collective Experiments with Sound’ produced by Duke and UdK in Berlin, co-taught by Lasch, Hinke, Jace Clayton (DJ Rupture), and Candice Hopkins (Documenta 14).
