Reflections on Time & Weekly Monster Opening at Prospect 4 in NOLA

November 16, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm UTC+0

Pedro Lasch presents two installations of different works at Prospect 4 New Orleans:

Reflections on Time at M.S. Rau in New Orleans’ French Quarter (630 Royal St, New Orleans, LA 70130)

&

The Weekly Monster at New Orleans’ Contemporary Arts Center (900 Camp St, New Orleans, LA 70130).

Reflections on Time (2017) is the newest installment of Pedro Lasch’s Black Mirror series and was created specifically for M.S. Rau, as part of the citywide Prospect.4 Triennial. Previous iterations have been exhibited at the Nasher Museum of Art (2008), MUAC (2014), and the Art Gallery of Mexico’s National Palace (2015). The installation juxtaposes eight 19th century clocks from M.S. Rau’s collection with Lasch’s Black Mirrors, metaphorically collapsing time. As viewers study their and the clocks’ reflections, ghostly images gradually emerge from the dark glass. These images depict historical representations of the concept of time. Each mirror focuses on different areas of knowledge, including astronomy, painting, science, photography, and media. The setup allows the viewers’ image to merge with those of the mirrors, integrating stories across centuries and worldviews.

The Weekly Monster (2016-2017) collapses different aspects of the story of Frankenstein with contemporary world affairs. It includes weekly social media posts, an installation of gallery prints at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), outdoor displays, and a series of workshops with social organizations and individuals based in New Orleans. These works and activities are also the subject of a special Prospect New Orleans publication launching in February, 2018, with an introduction by P4 curator Trevor Schoonmaker, and a critical essay by Nicholas Mirzoeff.
