Sydney Reede, SPL Fellow

In spring 2023, Duke undergraduate student and SPL fellow Sydney Reede created and produced Community Closest,  a celebration of fashion as a form of power and tool of resistance for Black people. Community Closet was a two-day event including an exhibit and reception of a magazine Sydney created and a fashion show in Bryan Center Plaza – both featuring Black-owned brands and Black student models. 

Community Closet was co-sponsored by the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Feminism, and the Franklin Humanities Institute Social Practice Lab and Artistic Research Initiative supported by the Mellon Foundation.
