Dr. Neil Prose, a core faculty member of the Health Humanities Lab, is currently teaching a Duke freshman seminar as part of the Focus program. The course, “Singing the Same Song” provides a global perspective on empathic and effective communication between providers and patients. Dr. Prose brought his students to the Nasher Museum and they spent the morning at the exhibit: “Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art.” The interactive workshop was led by Dr. Lynn McKinley-Grant from Duke’s Department of Dermatology and Dr. Marianne Wardle, Curator of Academic Programs at the Nasher. The students focused on the importance of close observation and the ways in which the interpretation of art can help to cultivate curiosity and empathy.
