The Struggle to Remain: Latin America – 1/14 & 1/16

Please join us for events on the root causes of global migration, in particular, the role of the US, other western countries, large transnationals and corrupt governments in the creation of conditions that have given rise to a permanent flow of human beings fleeing violence and death.
Dates: Monday, Jan. 14th & Wednesday, Jan. 16th — 12pm-1pm
For these two sessions focusing on Latin America, we have invited Suyapa Portillo Villeda, Associate Professor of Chicano/a-Latino/a Transnational Studies at Pitzer College, to join us via video-call. Her research focuses on gender and labor history in the Americas, Central American immigrants and migration, Honduras and Hondurans in the US, Central American transnational social movements, and LGBTQ human rights in Central America. Social Movements Lab Fellow, Roxana Bendezu, met Prof. Villeda during a visit to Honduras last January as part of an emergency delegation to support el ERIC, an organization that houses Radio Progreso and a group of grassroots organizers supporting local actions to re-establish democracy in their country.
