Zoom KABOOM presents:
Virtual Musical Devices in Altspace (Social VR)
Monday November 16, 5:00pm
Join Zoom Kaboom guide Dave Zielinski on an exploration of Social VR in Altspace.
Starting just this year, our team (David J. Zielinski, Kenneth Stewart, Jil Christensen) has produced several interactive virtual musical devices for the Social VR platform Altspace. Ranging from the traditional (piano and staff) to the fantastical (kinetic sound sculpture for virtual burning man 2020). By using a Social VR platform we can explore these musical devices together (up to 70 people in the same room/world) even as we are physically separated.
Please register and attend the Zoom Kaboom event Monday November 16 at 5:00 for the guided exploration and discussion.
This is best experienced with a VR headset (the low cost Quest works quite well). There is also a PC and now MAC desktop client.

This new SPL series is based on the sharing and production of online experiences and meeting places. How can we safely fight against the alienation of this pandemic, as well as other past and future obstacles to social life, be it the distances between us, our implicit hierarchies, or even specific features of our bodies? What can more immersive modes of remote shared experience bring to our life, dialogues, interactions, politics, artworks and performances? How can we leave Zoom behind us and forge a journey into alternate domains?
Accompanied with simple instructions on how to join, every Zoom KABOOM session includes at least one guide who is familiar with that week’s alternative platform. What we do or discuss as we experiment with alternative platforms will be different each time and it may or may not be directly related to a given platform.
Each session has three parts, starting with us gathering at our regular Zoom (Kaboom) link for 15min, then exploring the alternative platform for 30min, and ending with 15min group commentary, reflection or analysis at the regular zoom link. If a platform is conducive to conversation, we may stay there for the final part.
