Title: Intermediate Classical Armenian

Location: Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota, USA.

Applicants: Graduate students/recent PhDs who have already participated in an introductory course to Classical Armenian, and for whom its study is critical; must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Cost & Accommodation: Funded by Dumbarton Oaks, with housing and dining provided by Saint John’s University; students pay for travel costs to and from Collegeville, Minnesota.

Duration: Four weeks

Description: “Sessions are held Monday–Friday in the morning and afternoon. Total instruction time equals 110 hours. In this course:

  • Students will receive intensive, in-depth training in Classical Armenian at the intermediate level.
  • Students will review grammar and read Classical Armenian texts in a variety of genres of prose and poetry, with readings supplied both from published texts and manuscript images.
  • Students will be guided in the use of the primary lexica and grammars, bibliography, and both print and online resources that are essential for the study of the Classical Armenian literary tradition.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to independently approach Classical Armenian texts and translate from Armenian into English with confidence.
