Ellen McLarney

Ellen McLarney is an associate professor of Arabic literature and culture in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University. She is currently director of the Duke Middle East Studies Center, interim director of the Duke Islamic Studies Center, and Editor in Chief of the Journal for Middle East Women’s Studies. Professor McLarney’s book Soft Force: Women in Egypt’s Islamic Awakening was published by Princeton University Press in 2015 and won the best book award from the Association of Middle East Women’s Studies. She is now completing a manuscript Black Arts, Black Muslims: Race, Religion, and Culture in the United States. She was a Hurford Family Fellow at the National Humanities Center, a Stanford Humanities Fellow in the Department of Religious Studies, and a two time Fulbright Fellow (in Tunisia and Argentina). She was also awarded a small grant from the Pluralism Project for outreach to the local Muslim community in Durham and the Triangle.
